Why Minor in Language Studies?
You can major in anything and minor in a language! The Language Studies minor is well-suited to students pursuing degrees in Criminology, Nursing, Social Work, or Professional Aviation Flight Technology. In these and many other disciplines, there is high demand for individuals with knowledge of other languages and cultures.
Language Studies strengthens your reading, writing, editing, and critical thinking skills, preparing you to apply your knowledge of language and culture throughout your career. Language skills and cultural competency can heighten your marketability to employers and increase your earning potential.
Program Availability
The Language Studies Minor is open to all currently enrolled students on campus at Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana. This minor is not available online.
Students with a high school background in a language should take the Non-Native Language Placement Test to determine what courses they should begin with if selecting a specific language as their focus. Students who test into 102, 201, 202, or higher, and who complete their courses with a passing grade of C+ or higher for 102 and C or higher for 200-level and above, can receive back credit for previous courses.
Please Note: The Non-Native Language Placement Test is not a test-out option. Students must complete the course they test into in order to receive back credit. Consult with your advisor before enrolling in courses to ensure suitability and to plan your program of study.

The Language Studies Minor consists of 21 course credits at the 200-level and above. You will select an area of focus from the following: French, Japanese, Latin, Linguistics, Spanish, or Teaching English as a Second Language.
